This study sought to understand the unprecedented situation we face today, the merging of the economic, climate, energy, and food crises and how we must approach all four of the crises using degrowth strategies to mitigate the damage the capitalist growth model has caused, while finding solutions that result in local resiliency. Transition towns are one of the many emerging degrowth models based on the premise that local resiliency and community-based economies can move us beyond the crises and toward a sustainable future. This study sought to use research gathered from transition towns to inform resilience and sustainability in our own town, Park City, Utah, by gathering data from key stakeholders in the greater Park City area focused on sustainability efforts. This study then examined the assets and barriers of the Park City efforts and used the transition town movement to inform the initial stages of transition for the community, by identifying adaptions and implementations necessary for Park City to transition. Information gained from this research was then used to guide the creation of an energy descent action plan for the greater Park City area. Our findings and recommendations in the plan help to conceptualize a sustainable future for the community. |
