Description |
A Narrowband UVB (NB-UVB) algorithm was developed assisting health care provides to safely and effectively prescribe light therapy and in-turn allowing patients to achieve the best possible outcomes. Phototherapy is a safe and potentially effective modality used in dermatology for treatment of multiple dermatoses (diseases of the skin). The effectiveness of the therapy is dependent upon the utilization of an accurate algorithm based on diagnosis. A local dermatology clinic under-utilizes phototherapy treatment because of an absence of a set algorithm for phototherapy. Objectives for this project include: Know learning needs of local resident dermatologists Develop NBUVB Algorithm for local dermatology clinics that is evidence-based Provider education Present, implement, and evaluate the new NB-UVB algorithm Evidence-based research has demonstrated the medical benefits of treating multiple dematoses with UV light. There is an increase in knowledge of the mechanism of action and therapeutic benefit of Narrowband UVB, however familiarly with this treatment is declining. Efficacy of this treatment modality is dependent upon correct delivery of therapy. Health care providers must be able to prescribe treatment with ease, and follow an established protocol. The new protocol was implemented on 2/15/13 at dermatology grand rounds. It was emailed to local dermatology clinics and dermatology residences. It was also posted on the NB-UVB machine. Evaluation of new the algorithm includes counting the number of physicians and providers at a local dermatology clinic who are prescribing NB-UVB and surveying the knowledge base of local dermatology residents before and after the grand rounds presentation. |
