After experiencing a multitude of various special needs programs (ranging from dance to climbing to personal training) in the surrounding Salt Lake City area, I found a focus on the interaction between special education and dance. Specifically, I turned to Tanner Dance to participate and assist in their Learning and Engaging through Arts Discipline and Development. LEADD works with twelve adults with varying disabilities in a dance, music, and art class. I will focus on the dance class. With my experiences and knowledge of dance and creative dance practices, I present a reflective study on my time learning about the positive effects of dance on a social, cognitive, and academic level at with the LEADD class at Tanner Dance. Framing my work will be the exploration of identity through storytelling and personal narrative. I will give background information, describe the methodologies used in classes, and analyze the effects of such methods. |
