Description |
Presenting Symptom: Optic atrophy with gross clumping of retinal pigment. Pathology: Loss of pigment epithelium. Clinical: The patient was a 73-year old black female with longstanding syphilis of the central nervous system. The fundi showed, aside from optic atrophy, extensive loss of the pigment epithelium (accounting for the tessellated appearance of the fundus), extreme narrowing of the arteries and gross clumping of the pigment in the retina. The macular region - manifest in the photograph by the central reddish area - was the only normal portion of the fundus. The appearance is similar to that of an advanced retinitis pigmentosa. Disease/ Diagnosis: Retinitis pigmentosa |
