Description "The white hexagon and yellow triangle form a stylized sego lily, the state flower. It can also be seen as an abstract seagull, the state bird. Utah is famous for its wintertime powder. The white hexagon is a single snowflake of the greatest snow on Earth. Red and blue come together in the Great Salt Lake. A railroad viaduct was built across the lake causing an increase in salinity on one side and the water taking on a pinkish tinge. Keeping with the railway theme, the yellow triangle represents the golden spike nailed at Promontory Point. On the most basic level it is a landscape. Blue sky, Red cliffs, white mountains, yellow sun. If you look at the red area you can see the outline of a butte. The top is flat, then drops vertically, then gradually slopes down. Red and blue represent the two distinct geographies of the state. Redrock country to the south and mountain ranges in the north. Each part has its own tourist draw and represent what Utah has become internationally famous for, National Parks in the south and skiing and snow to the north. The colors echo the American flag and the current state flag. Blue and red come together all over Utah: academically with USU and the University of Utah, the two oldest state schools. and on the field with the epic rivalry between The U and BYU. The hexagon represents a beehive but in a way I feel is more effective than the beehive itself. It symbolizes a community that works for the good of the whole. Each bee does its part in providing for the entire swarm. For the people of Utah, the beehive symbolizes the Utah community as each person in Utah works together to support and help one another and to create a successful industry(Utah State Capitol). The hexagon is the building block of a beehive. Nuts and bolts are the building blocks of Industry. The hexagon connects the state motto with the state symbol visually."
