This flag design is intended to fit within the traditional look of what we expect to see in a flag, including strong horizontal stripes and bright colors, but also with a strong graphic element to make it stand out in the crowd. The colors relate to the two most important features of Utah to me: the beautiful open skies above the amazing nature that draws visitors to our state. The broad white stripe reminds us of the famous salt flats. The beehive concept almost has to be represented on our flag, so I included the powerful hexagonal element to represent that, drawing inspiration from the honeycombs within bee hives. The small golden six-pointed star draws inspiration from both the state flower, the sego lily, which has a similar formation in the center with the stamen, and a bee, which, if one looks closely, has four wings, a head and a tail, six points. The rest of the interior of the hexagon flips the blue and green, creating a mountain form capped in snow, and a large lake ringed in white salt, representing our famous Great Salt Lake and namesake of the capitol. One other thing the shape inside the top half of the hexagon brings to mind is the iconic shape of a house, reminding all that Utah is a wonderful place to call home.
