At the center of the flag is the beehive with seven layers. Behind it is the Sego Lilly. Above the center symbol are nine stars, four on one side and five on the other, representing Utah as the forty fifth state in the Union; along with the name UTAH at the top center. Below, are the dates of the settlement of Utah, and our official statehood, as well as the state motto, INDUSTRY. The colors are red, white, blue, gold, and black. The first three colors symbolize our great nation, but also denotes the blue of our skies and lakes, the red of our desert and canyon lands, and white zig-zag for our snow capped peaks. Gold is the result of our industry, just as the golden honey is the result of the work of the bees. Black depicts the hard work and resolve of the citizens of Utah in pushing the boundaries into the unknown.
