Description |
Presenting Symptom: Retinal hemorrhage. Pathology: Retinal hemorrhage into the vitreous. Clinical: Retrolental fibroplasia results from inhibition of the normal vascularization of the retina in premature infants exposed to sufficient quantities of oxygen. When the oxygen is removed, the vascularization then occurs anomalously causing dragging of the retina and hemorrhages into the vitreous. The patient was a 13-year old male who was born prematurely and exposed to the high oxygen atmosphere of an incubator for several weeks during the neonatal period. Both fundi showed traction of the retina nasally with sheathing of the arteries adjacent to the disc. Disease/ Diagnosis: Retrolental fibroplasia |
