Symbols of The UTAH Flag The layers of Delicate arch represent the many layers of Utah geography, Utah history, and Utah culture The strata of the Arch in the flag of Utah represents pieces of Utah History that come together to form a beautiful Delicate Arch. At the base of the arch is the pre-history, the formation of the Earth and Sky by the Great Creator. Layers of Dinosaurs and ancient animals. Other Layers represent the ancient inhabitants such as the Anasazi the Atlatl throwers and other cultures. Moving up the base of the arch are the Native American Tribes; the Utes from Whom we derive our states name, the Navajo, the Shoshone, the Paiutes, and Gosutes and others. The Catholic fathers Dominguez and Escalante were some of the first explorers in Utah and were followed by Trappers and Traders and then the Mormon Pioneers. Many features and towns in Utah were named for and by people in these groups. Other layers represent the miners, the farmers, the ranchers, merchants, educators, institutions, doctors, nurses, teachers, carpenters, stone masons, and on and on. Other layers represent cultures from all the countries of the earth and the islands of the sea who now call Utah their home. The arch represents a welcome to the world to pass through our arch and see our state. This Flag shows we live in a "Pretty Great State" and that "Life Elevated" and "The Greatest Snow on Earth" are not just slogans. The arch evokes images of mountains, hogans, tabernacles, the goosenecked San Juan River, the Capitol building, and of the beehive symbol of the Beehive State and Industry. The white sections of the flag symbolize our mountains covered in snow descending to the Salt Flats of the Great Salt Lake The Sun symbolizes a new day and a new flag as well as all the days that have passed. One line represents trails and rails. The Spanish Trail, the Mormon Trail, the Honeymoon Trail, The Hole in The Rock Trial and the California Trial. The Wedding of the Rails at Promontory Summit in 1869 which tied a nation together. The trails are now highways connecting the state together. Another line also represents rivers, streams and canals which bring water to our desert land. The Salt Flats and the Great Salt Lake. The last line represents ski tracks left in the "Greatest Snow on Earth" The borders represent the flags of our neighbor states and our close ties to each of them. In the end the Delicate Arch symbolizes beauty and unity that is solid as the Entrata Sand stone from which it was carved by the Great Creator. It is also delicate like the unity and beauty of the State of Utah, and we need to do everything to protect that unity and the beauty of the arch and of the state. |
