Description The red represents our red rock scenery and national parks. The blue represents our heritage and tradition. The gold represents our people. A ring of six hexagons forms a honeycomb pattern. Each outer cell represents a different group of people: five represent the native tribes, and one represents everyone else who has come to call Utah their home. Thus, the honeycomb represents how we join together to create a common identity and make Utah the great state that it is. The golden line binding the fields of red and blue represents our storied past and the golden spike which joined the first transcontinental railroad at Promontory Point. The number of sides the honeycomb symbol has is equal to the sum of digits in the year Utah became a state. (18 outer + 6 inner - 24) (1 + 8 + 9 + 6 - 24)
