Title Does the future of streaming look like cable?
Date 2024
Description For over four decades, TV and movie content producers were able to monetize their products through various channels across multiple timelines using Cable TV. A hit TV show would have its first run on commercial network TV stations, then the same content would be sold overseas and then to cable channels for reruns. Residuals generated by this model sustained the industry until Netflix revolutionized the content consumption model by offering all-you-can-eat at any time without commercials. This was a massive success as subscriber numbers climbed and consumers started cutting the cable "cord" in favor of on-demand streaming. Traditional content developers started their own streaming outlets which was then followed by restricting their own content to only their own services. Over the years as this sector of the entertainment/media industry took reign, the various monetization channels disappeared and the streaming service with its subscription-based model became the only way to monetize content. As the time-based value of content started to change so did the methods of sustainable revenue generating methods. The norm of the past is turning into a stagnant cycle of the future. Economic events and technological advances have further shaped what the potential future model of this industry will look like. This study will focus on the history of entertainment content delivery and monetization and look for the new ways streaming companies are attempting to expand their revenue model to continue sustaining themselves as the top dogs of the industry.
