Description The colors represent the two different ecological settings our state offers. Red and light blue represents red rock desert spotted with lakes, rivers and reservoirs. The upper side is light blue and white which represents cooler temperatures, more snow and higher elevations. The division between the two colors is represented by a line of 6 "mesas" or just indicators for counting in Native American glyphs. 6 because there are 6 Native American cultures that helped shape and preserve the land: Ute, Paiute, Goshute. Navajo, Shoshone and Fremont. The prominent snowflake in the center is our reliance upon snow and snowmelt for water as a recreation, a defining feature of the land (think of how water has shaped our Canyons, most treasured National and State parks), and as a life preserving element in our lives that needs to be protected and planned for future generations. The upper half of the snow flake is white indicating more snow pack, the bottom half is light blue indicating snow melt which not only affects the upper portion of the state but the lower one as well. The formation of the snowflake was chosen to represent mountain tops and clouds on the upper half and rivers and lakes on the lower half.
