Title |
Should we resurrect the glass-steagall act? |
Date |

Description |
Banking regulations have been a hot topic on both sides of the aisle in every election cycle since 2010. Americans can expect the debate to continue in the upcoming midterms and again in the next presidential election. Minor changes in banking regulations may not make much of a difference in the lives of most Americans, but small changes can have extreme impacts on the ability of public regulators to mitigate risk in the financial foundation of the economy. In this paper, I'll be looking back through the highlights of fiscal policy in the past century while examining the core questions of today's debate. Should we resurrect the Glass-Steagall Act, bringing down Wall Street executives and kneecapping the power of big banks in the process, or would stringent regulations do more harm than good for our economy by undermining the power of the free market? |
