Why does it seem as though women are still paid less than their male counterpart? That is because they are. The wage gap still exists and is not estimated to fully close until 2152. There are many reasons why women are paid less than men. The first is the lack of transparency in companies, sometimes women do not even realize they are being paid less because they lack salary comparison. The positions that women work or that are available for them to work in is another common reason for a difference in paychecks. Stereotypes also emerge as justifications for why there are not more women CEOs or why they do not work the higher paid positions; or if they are in higher paying positions, why they do not get paid the same as their male counterparts. These reasons and stereotypes should not keep women from having the same opportunities as men. Closing the wage gap and enforcing equal pay for equal work is an important step that needs to be taken. Women are capable, strong, and hardworking just like men; and they deserve the same opportunities--in particular the same pay--that men are given. In this essay, I maintain that salary transparency, women's experience in the workplace, and the positions women work contribute to the wage gap. In addition, I will discuss how the realization of these aspects can help to close the wage gap. Closing the wage gap can enhance businesses success, reputation, and growth. |
