Show This photograph shows a large audience seated in the Ernst Nature Theatre presumably at Wasatch Academy. The amphitheatre was a gift from Senator Richard P. Ernst. The audience is seated in three sections with two isle ways dividing the middle section from the right and left sections. The audience is dressed in a wide array of light and dark colored clothing. Some members hold umbrellas over their heads. In the very back of the left and middle sections there appears to be many people standing, and also many people standing in the back of the left isle. In the background, houses are visible behind a thick array of trees and shrubbery. The foreground is dominated by a large oval area of grass in front of the stands which would presumably be the stage. A border of rocks, impeded in the ground, can be seen directly in front of where the audience is sitting (probably a boundary separating the stage from the seating stands). At the very right is a light colored bench and at left are what appear to be four sticks or very small trees that stand next to each other in single file. |
Further Information |
The photograph has been semi-mounted on brown construction mat paper; the top section of the photograph has been glued while the bottom portion is free. The bottom portion when flipped up reveals the identity of the amphitheatre: "ERNST NATURE THEATRE [,] The Ernst Nature Theatre was a gift from Senator Richard P. Ernst and was dedicated June 6, 1922." The photograph in general is in good condition. The brown construction mat paper is creased and fading. On the back, written in pencil, is: "(No.2) [,] Wasatch ?" In pen is circled: "No 2." Wasatch Academy was founded on April 19, 1875 by the Reverend Duncan James McMillan whom also had a major influence in founding Westminster College. A protégé of Sheldon Jackson, he came to the Salt Lake Valley in March of 1875 to find refuge from his bronchial condition and to establish a proselytizing mission to convert Mormons. However, McMillan soon turned his efforts to education when his proselytizing efforts towards the Mormons proved futile. He then founded Wasatch Academy in Mount Pleasant, Utah and opened a number of subsequent schools of the same nature in northern and southern Utah. |
