Collection Inventory +/-Biographical Note/Historical Note +/-Westminster College in Salt Lake City, Utah was chartered in 1895 under the name Sheldon Jackson College. General John Eaton was the first and only person to serve as the president of Sheldon Jackson College (from 1895-1901). The college opened in 1897 on the Salt Lake Collegiate Institute campus and held one commencement under that name on June 4, 1901. The Trustees approved a name change to "Westminster College" in February 6, 1902. James E. ("Pete") Petersen, Kennecott Copper Company's industrial relations manager served the college twice, once for 8 months as Interim President in 1979 and again from 1982-1985 (as 13th president). A businessman with no college degree, he saw the college through the brink of bankruptcy and a reorganization that put it on the road to its current success. Charles H. Dick (14th college president (1985-1995) was an educator, administrator, and fundraiser. Previous to serving at Westminster College, he had been president of Centenary College in New Jersey and Vice-President at Cornell University Medical Center. From 1983 until 1998, the institution was officially named Westminster College of Salt Lake City, a legally distinct institution from Westminster College. Content Description +/-This small collection consists of correspondence, memoranda, and reports of Westminster College of Salt Lake City Presidents James E. Peterson and Charles H. Dick. The materials date from 1983-1987. Most memoranda and correspondence are communications with the Board of Trustees and Board Committees, or reports submitted to the Board. Other records are letters of appreciation and transmittal letters to faculty and college staff. The 1983-1984 files (Box 1, Folders 1-2) are those of President Petersen. Several of the letters are cosigned by Robert F. Weyher, the Chairman of the Board. In the 1983 file, there is a letter in which Petersen announces the resignation of Douglas W. Steeples, Academic Vice President and Dean of the Faculty. The 1985 file (Box 1, Folder 3) has letters both from President Petersen and President Dick. A June 24, 1985 letter from Petersen states "Tomorrow will be my last day with Westminster College ... ". In a letter dated September 9, 1985, President Charles H. Dick writes to the Board of Trustees to report on his progress over the summer, and announce that his presidential investitute is scheduled for October 19, 1985 in Payne Gymnasium. In the same letter he reports that Gary Fitzer has been named the new Dean of Students. The 1986-1987 files (Box 1, Folders 4-5) are those of President Dick. In a letter dated June 11, 1986, addressed to "Chuck" (Charles Dick) from Edward S. Sweeney (Chairman of the Development Committee), Sweeney states "Congratulations! The College reached another milestone by operating in the black for the third consecutive year". Collection Use +/-Restrictions on Access: Open to public research.
