Home visits are a powerful tool for building home-school relationships based on mutual trust (Ferlazzo, 2011; Gonzalez, et al., 2005; Smith, 2013). This action research, qualitative study used a funds of knowledge approach to explore how teacher home visits foster collaborative home school relationships and improve teacher advocacy. Through teacher home visits, families, students and teachers experience vulnerability and participate in collaborative goal setting. Teacher advocacy was improved through the home visit practice. Findings support strengthened interpersonal relationships between teachers, students and families through the building of mutual trust. The study concludes with the writing of a grant proposal for a teacher home visit project and funding for home visit professional development opportunities for staff. |
