Description Teachers of kindergarten students are under a great deal of pressure to get students reading at grade level by the end of the school year. In a Title I school in Utah, 27 kindergarten students worked towards the goal of learning the letters and sounds of the alphabet. The effective strategies the teacher used were songs, games, a homework program, and writing. Each week students were assessed as a way to monitor their progress. The use of these strategies assisted students in achieving the goal of learning letter names and sounds.
