Non-Pharmacologic Management of Enuresis

Primary nocturnal enuresis is an ongoing, global problem, affecting 15-20% of five year olds, and 5% of 10 year olds (Kiddoo, 2015). The purpose of this scholarly project was to provide education for providers to facilitate optimal non-pharmacologic management for children who suffer from primary nocturnal enuresis. The methods included surveying primary care providers regarding awareness and comfort of enuresis management. An online educational resource delineating non-pharmacologic interventions of nocturnal enuresis management was developed by an expert pediatric team. Next the educational tool was implemented in the primary care clinic setting over a two-week period. A follow up survey of the providers analyzed the effectiveness of the educational resource. The results comprised the following: 90% of providers rated their own level of preparedness for managing enuresis as substantially increased after watching the educational resource. 50% of providers actually shared the resource with patients and families during the two-week study period and reported positive patient feedback from the instructional online tool. 95% of providers were willing to recommend the enuresis video to patients and families in the future. These outcomes indicated that the online educational resource did account for an increased satisfaction and confidence level from providers regarding non-pharmacologic management of enuresis. Patients and families were given immediate tools to implement in the care of enuresis. Implications for future research include monitoring the satisfaction level of patients and families regarding the ease and accessibility of the online educational resource.
