A single star, representing the state, in a blue sky over a red earth. At center, a beehive (representing industry), the most recognizable icon of the "Beehive State". The star/stripes and colors red, white, and blue evoke the American flag. The shades of red and blue should match those of the American flag as closely as possible. The four colors all together - red, white, blue, and gold - are typical of flags of neighboring Southwestern states (CO, AZ, NM), and give the flag a distinctly Southwest character. Possible additional/alternative symbolism for the two stripes: blue representing the Great Salt Lake (and Northern Utah by extension); red representing red rocks, hills, and canyons (Southern Utah). The design is intended to facilitate ease of manufacture; the simple geometry of the beehive means that it can be easily constructed from strips of gold fabric appliqued to the flag, or by other methods besides printing. The design can be adapted to various flag dimensions but is intended for a standard proportion of 2:3.
