"This flag represents the lands, the heritage, and the people of the state of Utah. The snow capped peaks and red rock canyons, along with the depiction of both the Great Salt Lake on the left (up), and Utah lake on the right(down) illustrate the diversity of our geography as well as our people and politics. Red and Blue are adjacent, representing bipartisan collaboration. There are three symbols on the flag. The star represents Utah's dark skies, Utah's statehood, and Utah's culture of citizenship and participation in government. The two black petroglyph deer emphasize the diversity and rich cultural backgrounds of Utah's many people, both ancient and modern. The group of three seagulls identifies the Great Salt Lake, and also represents Utah's strength, unity, growth, and hope for the future. The seagulls are also a tribute to the challenges and successes of the pioneers who settled in Utah in the 1800s."
