Description The blue portion along with the stripes are reminiscent of the US flag, and the single star represents Utah's place on that flag. The stripes take on new meaning with 7 red stripes symbolizing the bravery of the Pioneers travel to and settling in Utah in 1847. The 6 white stripes represent unity, and the year 1896 when Utah was officially adopted as a state. The exact shades of these blue and red regions are the same as those on the original Utah flag- symbolic for remembering our history and heritage. The white, grey, and orange regions come together to form the shape of Utah when the flag is viewed vertically (The blue region is geometrically proportionate to the state's distinctive notch). The choice and placement of these three colors carry many meanings: - The white area on its own represents the Great Salt Lake, and the Salt Flats. - The grey area represents the Iron Rod, from a story in the Book of Mormon. This symbolizes the journey that the Saints and Pioneers took to get here. - The orange area on its own represents the red rocks in southern Utah. - The white and grey together represent our mountains, which are a symbol for natural beauty and state pride. - The orange and grey together represent the desert varnish atop the red rocks, which houses native rock art. It's a symbol representing Utah's original inhabitants.
