Description My concept for the new state flag was to represent the whole state and our people with a simple design that would look good flat and when it was hanging on a pole, softly draping down. It was important to me that our colors in the flag were unique to Utah and no other country or flag color used the same combination of colors. Consequently, I picked Blue, White and Rust/red. The combination of those three colors have not been used together as far as I can find. The Blue is for the Utah Sky The White is for the Utah Snow The Rust/red is for our famous Red Rock (which is mostly rusty orange and I couldn't find a crayon that worked, but hopefully you can imagine what I was reaching for in the Rust and the Blue, which should be dark blue but not tooo dark...) I'm not a graphic artist but I wanted the Wasatch Mountain portion of Big and Little Cottonwood Canyons to be used for the mountain profile; standing for northern Utah...I think I captured that mostly....then I thought Delicate Arch is known world-wide so we don't need to put the Utah name on the flag and the Arch really represents the red rock country of southern Utah. I included a "cityscape" at the base of the mountains, attempting to have it show the well ordered plan of our streets as laid out by the pioneers, and to have it flow back to a vanishing point to draw in the eye of the person looking at the flag. Hopefully it shows the connection of the "city, industry and our people" in connection to the natural landscape that surrounds us. I thought about adding some profiles of our iconic buildings, but decided a simpler "city" view would better represent all our cities and towns across the state.
