I wanted to create a flag which was a fresh and modern take on our state, it's people and the country in which it's connected to. With a nod to a traditional US flag orientation in my design, I used an upper-left field of focus with balancing stripes of color below. I chose to focus on color that is reflective of the natural beauty that surrounds us here in our state's unique setting; the white of the snow covered mountains, the blue of the Great Salt Lake and the wind-swept skies, the green of the many trees, forests and plants. The top half of the flag is focused on the mountains. Not only are they the element many Utahns identify as their state's pride and focal point, but they also serve to represent the land upon which our state rests and acknowledge the people and communities which first inhabited the region. The bands of blue and green below serve to represent movement and diversity as pioneers and later immigrants were drawn to this area growing it into the state that we live in now. As we head into the future, Utah is drawing new ideas, new business and new opportunity into it's embrace. Perhaps the overall feeling that I wanted the flag to convey, was one of freshness, beauty and vibrance with a nod to nature, history, connection and foundation from where it all started.
