Interpersonal violence on university campuses and within university communities has always existed, but recently these issues are becoming more prevalent in the public eye. How universities handle these issues, the policies they put in place, and the efforts to reduce these incidents are ever-changing and actively debated in the United States. Though nationally there are policies that have been put in place recently for universities to follow, there still are issues in the way that reports of intimate partner violence or sexual assault are handled by campus officials and local law enforcement agencies. This paper will analyze the federal, state, and university-level policies that exist surrounding interpersonal violence on university campuses, including The Clery Act and Title IX, and will discuss the language used to determine who and what these policies are made for, what gaps are created, and how these issues can be mitigated to be more successful. This will be done through a content analysis of university policies surrounding campus interpersonal violence and using data from my own research that was collected as part of the Campus Intimate Partner Violence (CIPV) project at the University of Utah on how the students understand and use language surrounding interpersonal violence and sexual assault. |
