The "Monomyth", otherwise known as the "The Hero's Journey," is the title of the seventeen steps Campbell described in his examination of myths, legends, and fables across the world. Even in the tales of today, the presence of the Monomyth still is seen in many narratives, including the newest storytelling medium, that of digital games. However, in open world, narrative-driven video games such as Outer Wilds, developed by Mobius Digital and published in 2019 by Anapurna Interactive, where the Monomyth endures, the unique nature of interactive video games gives The Hero's Journey a new approach for authors and experiences for audiences. This paper seeks to illustrate how Campbell's insight is still relevant even with the development of new mediums for delivering literature, and how the aspects of his Monomyth have evolved with the introduction of interactive narratives. |
