Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD), also known as Sensory Integration Disorder (SID), is a complex neurological disorder in which sensory information from the body's five sensory systems is perceived abnormally. Relative to children, approximately 16% have symptoms of SPD, while 40% to 84% of children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and 45% to 95% of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder experience symptoms of SPD. Significant associations have been found between sensorimotor skills, cognitive processing, and academic achievement in children with ADHD, increasing the importance of early recognition and treatment. |
