Title |
Oil-impregnated sandstones in Utah and Wayne Counties, Utah |
Date |
1972 |
Description |
Two little known occurrences of oil-impregnated sediments are discussed briefly. One is a fairly extensive area of asphalt-bearing Tertiary beds in the vicinity of Thistle, Utah County. The other is a very limited exposure of Jurassic sandstone permeated with dead oil on Thousand Lake Mountain in Wayne County. Both areas are in rugged mountain terrane and both are partially obscured by Tertiary volcanic cover. The asphaltic deposits mapped near Thistle were mined in pioneer times and may be of future commercial interest. The single exposure of oil-impregnated sandstone high on Thousand Lake Mountain suggests that similar material lies under the volcanic rubble. |
