Description Nursing does not appear to have an inclusive environment conducive to cultural/racial/ethnic diversity in the workplace. This needs assessment evaluated the challenges faced by newly hired, diverse nurses working in a hospital setting, and provided contextually relevant information to aid the development of a culturally inclusive program. A literature search was performed and a consultation with a diversity ethnologist conducted. A survey was administered to 227 registered nurses within the first year of their hire, with a response rate of 20%, and 19% of those responding identifying as diverse. General descriptive statistics, descriptive analysis, and information regarding perceptions of needs and barriers were assessed. The results demonstrated that while it would appear at face value diverse nurses feel inclusion, there is an undercurrent of discontent or dissatisfaction. At least 30% of participants reported feeling uncomfortable due to their race/ethnicity/culture, 30% did not feel their contributions to the unit have been recognized, 40% were neutral in feeling they were encouraged to suggest alternative ways to solve problems, 50% agreed or were neutral in feeling there would be negative consequences if they reported unfair treatment, and 50% have considered leaving the unit for reasons related to cultural environment, staff, or leadership. Analysis of the qualitative survey responses indicates a need for a mentorship program and leadership involvement in a cultural awareness program for the staff.
