EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique), also referred to as tapping, is a holistic approach that interrelates mind, body and spirit. The EFT process involves gentle percussion on a series of acupressure points on the face and body, while speaking an individualized phrase (Sebastian & Nelms, 2017). As such, EFT is a source of treating mental health disorders in primary care. Anxiety, Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and depression have undesirable effects on patient health, healthcare resources, and disability. The objective of this research is to evaluate the role of EFT for promotion of mental wellbeing, and as part of a patient-centered approach to treating common psychological conditions. A literature search was performed to identify research on the utilization of EFT for common mental health conditions using keywords EFT, Emotional Freedom Technique, phobia, anxiety, depression, and PTSD. Current research supports the use of EFT as an effective part of mental well-being that improves symptomatology of anxiety disorders, PTSD, phobias and depression. Unlike the majority of current treatment standards, EFT can be self-taught and places minimal burden on healthcare resources or costs. EFT is an effective form of treatment that primary care providers can offer patients to help manage the symptoms associated with mental illness. |
