Description Flag 1 The origin of this flag design comes from the state nickname ‘The Beehive State'. The symbols represent the top three official state symbols from the state flag survey by Y2 Analytics; the beehive, winter sports and honey bee. At the center of the flag is a single large hexagon (honeycomb) symbolic for beehive. Hexagons are some of the most common shapes in nature. Honeycombs have wax shaped hexagon cells and insect eyes have thousands of hexagon shaped lenses. Hexagons have six equal sides and six equal angles. Each equal side of this hexagon is used to pay homage to the six indigenous tribes of Utah (Northern Utes, White Mesa Utes, Shoshone, Goshute, Navajo and Paiute). The hexagon also represents the state motto ‘Industry'. Charles Darwin described the honeycomb as a masterpiece of engineering. "It is absolutely perfect in economizing labor and wax". The early Utah pioneers built the state by working together as one. At the center of the honeycomb is a single large yellow and black honeybee representing the original LDS pioneers. ‘Deseret' is a word from ‘The Book of Mormon' meaning honeybee. The black background within the honeycomb is symbolic of the state rock ‘Coal'. The top two (white/grey) sides of the honeycomb represent Utah's snowcapped mountains and ‘The Greatest Snow on Earth' for all winter sports in Utah. The four bottom (yellow) sides of the honeycomb form an abstract ‘U' for Utah. Utah comes from the Ute tribe meaning ‘People of the Mountains'. The blue flag background represents ‘The Great Salt Lake'. The largest salt water lake in the western hemisphere.
