Description |
Blazonry: Traditional-party per fess gules and azure with a bar argent centered. On a shield of the second bordered or, a beehive proper at honor point and two railroad spikes of the third and fourth per saltire at nombril point. Modern-the field is red over blue, divided horizontally with a white accent bar. At center, a shield in blue with gold border on which is a beehive in natural colors above gold & silver railroad spikes crossed as an X. Symbolism: Although it has 3 stripes, the white is narrow enough that the flag qualifies as a bi-color, of which there are less than a dozen worldwide and none among the several states. The narrow stripe also makes it unique; no other bi-color flag is two heraldic colors accented by a heraldic metal. The design is simple-the "blazon" (description) totals 40 words. The stripes (Old Glory Red, white & Old Glory Blue) recall the federal Union of which Utah is a proud part. The 3 stripes represent Utah's 3 governments - provisional, territorial & state. They also remind us that, though we may be divided by ethnicity, culture or philosophy, we are all, ultimately, one people under one flag. The shield represents the State's sovereignty and authority-it is updated & simplified from the State seal, following the currrent trend of simplifying business logos. It bears symbols of the State's most significant events: A beehive represents the Latter-Day-Saint pioneers and declares the State's motto, "Industry", as well as our official nickname, "the Beehive State". Gold & silver spikes signify the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad and our tourism nickname, "the Crossroads of the West". It also meets all requirements for a quality design: The shield contains two nationally-recognized symbols associated with Utah. This escutcheon, by itself, could become Utah's logo. As an avatar for the official website and other uses; as a shoulder/chest patch for official clothing or uniforms. It also offers the possibility of a profitable brand symbol for tourist-oriented clothing, souvenirs and more. |
