Design for a new Flag of Utah by Xander Dorn Flags should be so simple that even a child can draw it from memory well enough to be instantly recognizable. In this design the flag would still have a blue background. However, the exact shade is changed to the same blue that is used in the Flag of the United States to signify the relationship. The beehive has been and still is the most recognizable symbol of the state, having been employed on previous state flags and other media. The design of the beehive used here is taken from the 2021 commemorative flag of Utah but slightly changed in its proportions. The beehive is now exactly three eights the width of the flag and exactly half the height, making it easier to draw more precisely even by children with the help of a simple ruler. The same goes for the positioning of the beehive on the flag. When flown from a pole, the hoist side of a flag is better visible than the fly edge so the beehive is positioned further toward the hoist. The hoistward corner of the beehive is positioned exactly one eighth of the flag's width from the hoist and thus the flyward corner of the beehive is exactly in the center of the flag. With its several elements it would be hard to get every detail right, but even if it is simplified to a semi-ellipse as could be drawn by a child, the flag would still be recognizable and could not be mistaken for any other flag. Nevertheless, the fly side of the flag gets its own emphasize with a vertical honey golden stripe the same shade as the beehive. Flown from a pole, this leads to a dance of the well contrasted gold and blue, catching the eye and making the flag even more attractive. This vertical golden stripe is exactly one eighth the width of the flag and it is positioned one eight the width of the flag from the fly edge, again making drawing the flag more easy. Many flags of US states have a blue background. In this regard this flag design would not stand out but show relationship as it does to the US flag itself by using the same shade of blue. However, there is no US state flag that has its meaningful symbol in such prominence on the hoist side. The flag of Nevada for example has its seal on the hoist side as well, but not is such scale and not so clearly visible as the beehive is on this design. And with the exception of the flag of Tennessee no US state flag features an eye catching vertical stripe on the fly side, again making this design stand out a lot against other US state flags. sincerely yours, Xander Dorn About the submission rules: - the flag uses the 5 by 3 format but the design can be changed to 3 by 2 or other formats; for example the flag could be hung vertically down for which I recommend turning the beehive by 90 degrees so that it is still shown upright - my age is 37 - I do agree to necessary alterations or revisions by the Design Review Committee - I do not have yet decided whether or not I will submit more designs than this one but I will limit myself to no more than three designs - I agree to the release of all rights to the design so that the state of Utah can use it for all necessary purposes I do, however, not live in the state of Utah, I have only flown over it twice.
