Type 2 diabetes is one of the top three leading causes of death and disability in the United States, next to heart disease and cancer. It is well established that a lack of education, not only for diabetes, but for all chronic illnesses, can lead to poor patient outcomes. Due to healthcare provider shortages, short appointment times, and varying health literacy of patients, it can be difficult to provide consistent and effective diabetes education to patients. To simplify patient education and aid with time constraints, many healthcare providers have turned to electronic education modules or mobile apps to offer knowledge and support for their patients. Electronic education modules can assist with the delivery of education about the basic pathology of diabetes, effective lifestyle and management practices, common medications used to treat diabetes, and recommended screening appointments. Several research studies support the conclusion that comprehensive diabetes education empowers patients to take an active role in their care, improves lab values, and improves patient outcomes. This reinforces the value of electronic diabetes education resources as a tool for improving patient outcomes among patients living with type 2 diabetes. |
