The development and performance of a theatrical work is a complex process which involves myriad decisions and many participants. One of the most essential contributors is the Dramaturg, the individual responsible for guiding the production and ensuring that the final product is cohesive and true to the desired style, values, historical context, and spirit of the director. In order to assist a production team in navigating the creative process, it is common practice for a dramaturg to compile a production file, a binder or portable file-folder filled with relevant research supporting the director's vision. The production file might include research pieces regarding production history, social context, and theoretical background among other pertinent areas to be shared with various team members (actors, costume designers etc.), materials and drafts for publications (program notes, promotional fliers/ads etc.), talkback topics, lobby displays and any other material generated about or for the production. I would dearly love to see a feminist production of Henrik Ibsen's A Doll's House, presented as a piece of Epic Theatre consistent with the original style and intent of the founder of this type of theatre, Bertolt Brecht. My thesis project has therefore taken the shape of a basic dramaturgical production file containing the materials* needed to support such an approach, delineate my vision, and enable key team members to contribute to its realization. |
