Chair of the Department of Pathology 1968-1979. Dr. Eichwald was born in Hanover, Germany in 1913. He received his M.D. from the University of Freiburg in 1938 and from the University of Utah in 1953. He did his internship in Covington, KY and a second one in Dayton, OH. He complete a residency in pathology at Children's Hospital in Boston, followed by three years in the U.S. Army. He was an instructor in pathology at Harvard University 1946-1948 and then was recruited to the University of Utah and advanced from Assistant Professor to Associate Professor during the time 1948-1954. He left Utah to become the director of laboratory and experimental medicine at Montana Deaconess Hospital in Great Falls from 1954 to 1966 and then Director McLaughlin Research Institute and Professor of Microbiology at Montana State University 1966-1970. He returned to the University of Utah as Professor of Pathology and Surgery and Chair of the Department of Pathology in 1970. Dr. Eichwald was a pioneer in tissue transplantation and editor of the journal Transplantation for thirty eight years. Dr Eichwald died in 2007.
