Biographical Note/Historical Note +/-The Anne Newman Sutton Weeks Poetry Series was funded by an endowment from the poet in 1995; she donated additional funding a few years later. The poetry series brings major poets from around the globe to the campus each year. Anne Newman Sutton Weeks, born circa 1896, was a writer and poet. Poems by Anne : the verses, a 69-page book of Anne's poetry, was published in 1994 by Western Independent Colleges Fund. She was Utah native and alumnus of Westminster College. Married and widowed twice, both her husbands were geologists. While married to Fredrick Alfred Sutton and living in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Anne had a daughter, Shirley Ann Sutton in 1925. A second daughter, Rev. Marta Sutton Weeks, was born in 1930, also in Buenos Aires. Anne died May 13, 1997 at the age of 99 in Westport, Connecticut. The Kim T. Adamson Lecture Series on International Studies was established in 2001. Kim Thomas Adamson (born Kim Sutton Thomas) is the granddaughter of Anne Newman Sutton Weeks and daughter of Shirley Sutton Thomas. She served on the Westminster College alumni board from 2001 to 2004 and is currently a member of the Board of Trustees. She has funded the Kim T. Adamson Chair on International Studies, the Anne Newman Sutton Weeks Reading Room in the Giovale Library (in honor of her grandmother) and the Kim T. Adamson Alumni House. Adamson was part of the police academy in 1975 when it was at Westminster and graduated from Westminster with a B.S. in behavioral science in 1979. She has spent 22 years in law enforcement, 34 years in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves and served a tour of duty in Iraq. She is currently a senior justice court judge in Salt Lake City. The Tanner-McMurrin Lectures on the History and Philosophy of Religion was established at Westminster College of Salt Lake City in 1987 as a means of bringing major scholars in the fields of history and philosophy of religion to campus to deliver public lectures and conduct seminars on basic problems in religious thought and practice. The lecture series is administered by the President of Westminster College and funded in perpetuity by an endowment gift from Obert Clark Tanner, Professor Emeritus of Philosophy at the University of Utah, and Grace Adams Tanner. The Lectureship is named in honor of Dr. Sterling M. McMurrin (1914-1996), who was the E. E. Ericksen Distinguished professor Emeritus at the University of Utah, a former United States Commissioner of Education, and a trustee of Westminster College. The Weldon J. Taylor Executive Lecture Series at Westminster College, presented by American Express and the Bill and Vieve Gore School of Business, features distinguished speakers who consult with local business leaders and students enrolled in Westminster College's graduate and undergraduate business programs. The series is named after Dr. Weldon J. Taylor, the former dean of the Brigham Young University School of Business. Dr. Taylor was instrumental in developing the M.B.A. degree at Westminster College and the executive lecture series as part of the graduate program.
