Show I Council of the Uncompabgre Ute Indians held at the Sub-arjoncy ay. Ouray, Utah, April 20th, 1907. Tho object of the council was explained to the Indians and the letter of the Secretary of the Interior was first read to them. Explanations were then entered into as follows: CAPT. HALL: Tell the Indians that they are familiar with the plans for tho construction of a system of canals for the irrigation of their allotments and to build these canals Washington had to obtain a groat deal of moroy. T/hen I went to Washington ono your ago it was to help get money to build th^se canals. Congress said that the money would be given. Last year $125,000 was appropriated for this purpose and the canals which have been built up to tho present time have boon built with this money. NOTE: "Cant. T'all described in detail the operations up to the present time and the Government's plans for future construction." Host of the TJncorrpahgre Indiann wore allotted 100 acres fi£ land for farming and 10Q acres fif grazing land, making 320 acron of land in all. Ml tho heads of families wore allotted in this way. All singlo Indians Wore allotted 1^0 acrec of land. ^.one time ago I talked to you about, giing up some of your land which wa3 considered undesircable and a survey was mado to find out if any of the allotmonts wore bad. Host of tho allotments were found to bo good land and when I talked to you about giving up any of them, only one family agreed to do GO. Ashta and his family had been allotted land which could not be irrigated and he was convinced that it would bo better to take land olsowhore , oven though ho did not got no much of it. Tho cystem of canals at present projected will cover all of |
