Description Patients with non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NA-AION) tend to have small optic discs with little or no cupping. It has been suggested that these crowded 'discs at risk' also have smaller scleral canals. This anatomic feature may lead to the cascade of ischemic events resulting in NA-AION. The dimensions of the scleral canal have thus far only been indirectly postulated based on measurements of optic nerve head surface dimensions using fundus photography in NA-AION patients.
