Show Optimization of the StAR design at the GRIIDOE Burner Engineering Research Laboratory (BERL) at Sandia National Laboratory's Combustion Research Facility in Livermore, California, is the subject of Paper No. 11 . The Altex Temperature Controlled Low Emissions Burner The Altex design, which offers advantages for steel reheating and similar processes, is in the prototype design stage. Originally, Eclipse Combustion had been intended as the commercialization partner for the burner. However, reassessment of the market opportunities offered by the steel reheat market led Eclipse to withdraw from the program. Currently, GRI is seeking a burner manufacturer to carry the Altex design to the marketplace. An intriguing feature of the Altex design is its relative insensitivity to furnace temperature or air preheat levels (Figure 2). This is due to the fact that, as a consequence of staging the fuel and air, as well as entrainment of furnace gases, the flame temperature is maintained below the critical thermal NOx formation temperature.
