S i r : - I have t h e honor to report t h a t , in accordance with the sugg e s t i o n of t h e Lieutenant General of the Army t h a t I v i s i t the country m the v i c i n i t y of the j u n c t i o n of the Du Chesne and Nin-t a h Rivers, to s e l e c t a s i t e for a new post, I l e f t Omaha on the 9th August,1386. Upon a r r i v i n g at Port Bridger, Wyoming, I found numerous r e p o r t s a f l o a t regarding the intended or a c t u a l h o s t i l i t y of t h e I n d i a n s . As i t was necessary to order two companies from " o r t Bridger to v/ork on the road over the mountains, I deemed it a d v i s a b l e at once to move these companies out upon the road so that t h e y would be convenient to support and r e - i n f o r c e the troops intended to g a r r i s o n Fort Da Chesne in case the Indians should prove h o s t i l e. On a r r i v i n g at Ashley Valley, I found t h a t the Indians ./ere in fact very much e x c i t e d , had been l a y i n g in s u p p l i e s of ammunition and had sent t h e i r families i n t o the mountains.
