There is increasing awareness in the medical community that significant regional and individual variation in the practice of medicine is due, in part, to a discrepancy between the available literature and clinical practice. Practice pathways and guidelines have been advocated as one mechanism to reduce this practice variability; to increase quality of care; and to reduce costs.
