Description Mucormycosis is the common name given to several different diseases caused by fungi of the order Mucorales in the class Zygomycetes. The group of diseases known as mucormycosis has been known by other names throughout the years, including ""phycomycosis"" and ""zygomycosis."" Many different species have been implicated as etiologic agents of similar clinical syndromes, and the taxonomy of this group of mold fungi is complicated not only by the numerous examples of pathogenic members but also because of changes in the names of individual species that are made as new advances in structural and genetic classification are accepted.
