Description |
Meningiomas by nature are slow growing, benign, encapsulated tumors that are usually amenable to resection even when they occur in the orbit, optic canal or intracranial cavity. However, meningiomas at the orbital apex and cavernous sinus may be so invested into critical structures as to be difficult to access and hazardous to remove. These tumors may produce a variety of neuro-ophthalmological signs and symptoms including decrease in visual acuity, visual field, afferent pupillary defects, dyschromatopsia, papilledema, optic atrophy, diplopia and proptosis. Cushing may have been the first to note that symptoms associated with meningiomas may wax and wane in a pattern that relates to menstrual cycle. |
