Abstract A furnace and measurement system are introduced for the measurement of the mean and fluctuating component of temperature in a turbulent environment. These values are particularly important for the accurate prediction of the formation of thermal NOx in gaseous combustion. The furnace is 6.2 cm in diameter and 22.8 cm long. A centrally located methane/air flame is surrounded by an annular flow of cooler air. The mixing of these two gas streams provides a simple test bed for comparison with the results of simulation programs. The measured distribution of the gas temperature about the mean value at various locations in the furnace is shown to be similar that expected in larger furnaces.
