Description |
General view at Promontory, Utah, May 10, 1869, during the "Last Spike" ceremony when rails of the Central Pacific (now Southern Pacific) and the Union Pacific were joined to complete the first transcontinental railroad. The picture is taken from the U.P. locomotive #119, looking westward, and shows the four companies of the 21st Infantry in formation alongside the track Central Pacific's locomotive, ""Jupiter"", and tent-buildings of Promontory are also shown. This is a copy of Alfred A. Hart's stereoscopic picture No. 357 entitled "The Rival Monarchs." Gift of the Southern Pacific Co. Used in U.H.Q. April. 1961. |
