Show SCHOOL OF MANY FRIENDS LINTS1NG, SHANTUNG, CHINA. November 1,192'?. Dear Edith, *"-•••• J S h t e l ' s Typewritjíe» i s r e p o s i n g in my s t u d $ , s o I am going to Mchen chi Hui" an.l see if I can get the long-put-off letter written to you.S may have gotten a few letters writtenn in /ípV prevÉous years, but i hardly write my fam.ily til» year. When I heard a^out two weeks ago that postage was going to 1 eapm ot fifteen cents with the first of November I used that as a strong reason why I should make time to answer some of the letters I took to Peitaiho to answer in my spare time, most of them being over a year old.WeJl,I got a few of them done, but there are still plen£y hanging over my head. I haven't meant to make you wait so long, tho, for you should be told what is happening here. I expect taht one reason is that I hate to confesa how poorly you work is being done. Soon after we got back last fall MR,Eastman asked for all the court where the tatting school and so forth used to be (that having been split up by Mrs.Ma's activities and those of others,so that now she, Vlrs.Chiang,Jui K'e, Chang Lien Chang, and Mr.Kao all have their own concerns outside the yard),and al so the yard where Shu han and Shu Li lived for the men's work.He felt he could get nothing worth while with his five luindred dollars if he had to begin at the bottom, but that he could fix that place over iato suitable quarfeers for his work.He has but the two back yarda into one and moved that wall on the wast out to the street.Shu lifs roorns are the kitchen and I think the gate keeper lives there.Mrs.Chin's husband having gotten too oíd for the school job holds that position. Shu Lan*s rooms are to be used by teachers during station c classes. He says that there is no reason why the women*a work can't have th use of it when the men aren't there,so there will be a chance for you to have as big a claas as you will wver want. Shen The two women moved to the roorns next to the Chifs wiht Mrs. Shen. There was much weeping on the part of Shu Li,but the corcmittee having voted it she had nothing eíse to do.Paa An was put into school to live, Mrs.Srnith's ten dollars arriving just then and Mr.Eastman providing tha other two.üf course at vacation time some other provisión will have to he made. Shu Li has said tho that she doea not care to keep on in her present pesitioB after the end of the year. That if we have something el se for her to do she wiJl be glad, but if not she will go home.I suggested to Alma that she use her for hospital evangelist as she Is trying to find a new one.$he may do it, but she doesn't want her as she feels that her spirit is not what that of an evangelist should be.I expect that i am to blame for wWt¿ her feelings as i didn't waste much sympathy on her during the moving time. The other two women were satisfied with whatever we could do for them (^rs.Shen rose mightily in my estimation) and she thinks 1 favor Miss Chang as I gave her some keys to the storeroom, etc, in the other yard. They had a fuss over it and the &eys were given back to me.I kept them for a few days and thergot Shu Lan to the point of seeing sense so that she took them backM It was just after that that I was inftrimied that she wanted a change of work if 1 could give it to her,and if notnV, none at all. I must stop and go to school to see if the little kildies are doing their handwork as they should. They come over libre froru the kindergarten for that and play, boys and girls both. |
