Show PREFACE The Ute tales included in this volume have been obtained from the following sources: "Ute and Pai-ute Stories," collected by John Wesley Powell, Bureau of American Ethnology, unpublished manuscript 794-a, 1873; "Mythic Tales," collected by John Wesley Powell, First Annual Report, Bureau of American Ethnology, U.S.G.P.O., 1881; "Ute Tales," collected from Uintah Utes in 1900 by A. L. Kroeber, Journal of American Folklore, vol. 14, Oct.-Dec. 1901, p. 252-85; "Myths of the Uintah Utes," collected in 1909 by J. Alden Mason, Journal of American Folklore, vol. 23, July-Sept. 1910, p. 299-363; Duke Indian Oral History History Project, unpublished manuscripts, Marriott Library, University of Utah, 1968-1972. The stories have been verified, reviewed and edited for use in the public schools. Persons who have contributed to the gathering and editing of these tales are Norma Denver, June Lyman, Daisy Jenks, Floyd A. O'Neil, Gregory C. Thompson, Fred Conetah and Kathryn L. MacKay. The volume has been prepared with funds from the Uintah-Ouray Ute Tribe and the Research and Cultural Studies Development Section of the Bureau of Indian Affairs.
