The University of Utah sent seniors Jeff Simonich and Stacey Rhineer to compete in the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships this weekend at the RCA Dome in Indianapolis. Simonich, competing in the 3,000 meter event, placed ninth overall but was the fourth American to cross the finish line, giving him All-America status. His time of 7:58.61 was a half second off his all-time best in this event. This is the second All-America honor Simonich has earned this year. Rhineer, who was ranked 14th in the nation in the triple jump, improved her ranking to 13th, but was just short ofreceiving All-America honors. "The honors went down to the 10th place, so she just barely missed it," said Head Coach Mike Jones. "She was four inches off the mark. But she did move up in the final ranking." Jones believes the experience of competing at a national level was a good opportunity for both athletes. "They both did really well and had a good time. It was a good experience for both of them. They' re excited for the outdoor season to begin." |
