Description I have served as a tutor at a Title 1 elementary for four years, and my experiences served as my motivation for my integrated service project. My integrated service project centered on the deficiency of science, particularly biology, in Title 1 elementary schools. Because Title 1 schools receive funding primarily for math and reading, the importance of science is undervalued. Furthermore, studies have shown that integration of science during the developmental stages is essential. Research also proves that science develops inquiry and critical thinking skills, and it consequently leads to future success. As a result, my integrated service project involved the creation of a biology curriculum for individuals in kindergarten to second grade. The curriculum consisted of six lesson plans and corresponding hands-on activities, and it was implemented into a first grade classroom at Parkview Elementary. In order to provide a long-term impact, the curriculum was organized into a binder and flash drive. Hence, the curriculum can be easily accessed in the future. Moreover, the integrated service project has transformed me into a successful leader, and I will be able to apply my acquired skills and knowledge to future civic engagement.
